When the Something Picks Up

An interactive Halloween experience

There's something unsettling about a ringing telephone, especially when you're not expecting it.

Movies like Poltergeist and The Mothman Prophecies have always played with that feeling. An ordinary telephone becomes a connection to something unknown. A phone rings when nobody should be calling. A voice answers, but you're not entirely sure who's speaking.

What if we could recreate that feeling for Halloween?

Imagine walking through a neighborhood on Halloween night and discovering an old telephone booth among the decorations. Inside is a telephone. Maybe it's ringing. Maybe it's quietly waiting for someone to pick it up.

You lift the receiver. Someone answers. Or something does.

The voice might ask a question, tell a strange story, or respond to something you say. But who's really on the other end? Is it a recording, a person speaking remotely, or artificial intelligence responding in real time?

The idea is to leave that question unanswered.

What if the telephone could carry on a conversation? What if pressing different numbers led to different experiences? What if it rang on its own, or the conversation changed depending on who picked up?

AI, telephone systems, storytelling, and electronics offer some fascinating possibilities. Together, they could turn an ordinary telephone booth into an experience that feels strangely alive.

But the technology isn't the point. It's the uncertainty that makes the experience interesting: that moment when something familiar becomes inexplicable.

An ordinary telephone. An unexpected conversation. One lingering question.

Who's on the other end, and why are they calling?
